Produced by Aamir Khan Productions, the film is a sequel to the 1998 film Dabangg. It stars Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Amrita Singh. The film was released on 9 November 2001. It went on to be a commercial success, and was the seventh highest-grossing film of the year. Plot In the 12th century, the Muslim ruler of the Delhi Sultanate, Alauddin Khalji, orders the killing of all Hindus who attend a fair in Delhi in order to force them to convert to Islam. This is a historic event known as the 12th century massacre of the Delhi Sultanate, and marked the commencement of the Delhi Sultanate, and later, the Mughal Empire. Almost twelve centuries later, in the mid-1990s, the titular character, Lagaan (Laxman), is a wily farmer and former cricket player who lives with his wife Lachi (Lata) and son Raghav (Raghu) in a village of Punjab, India. He lost his hand in an accident with an electrified wheel. Lagaan is quite wealthy, owning a large field of agricultural land and a cow, which he donates to Lachi every year. However, he lacks self-confidence. Lagaan must work hard to earn enough money to send Raghav to the village of his uncle, Bhai Mardana, a cricket-loving, chain-smoking retired policeman who lives with his much younger wife of three years, Nandini, and her infant son Vicky. Vicky loves cricket as much as his father and Raghav. Lagaan finds it impossible to ask for money to send his son, but Bhai Mardana has a way to solve the problem. Lagaan learns from Bhai Mardana that in the next village to his, an agricultural tax of one rupee per fifty sheep must be paid to the ruling Muslim ruler for every harvest of wheat, cotton and barley. Because of his poverty, Lagaan has failed to pay the tax. As a means of testing Lagaan's character, Bhai Mardana asks him to convince his well-meaning neighbours to hand over the tax money to him.
